elektro gitar çalanların ustalık turnusollerinden biridir, her ne kadar kolay bir şarkı olsa da.
örneğin gitara yeni başlayanlar tek nota ile çalar riffini. bir süre sonra power chord ile çalar. bir süre sonra çaldığıyla kayıttakinin uyuşmadığını görür acemi gitarist ve çaldıklarını transpoze etmesi gerektiğini öğrenir. ama hala bir şeyler eksiktir. sonra "hmmm power chordları farklı pozisyonda çalmam gerekiyor" der. performans videosuna bakar ki ritchie blackmore bu şarkıyı bare akorla çalmaktadır. "nasıl ya?!" diye bir şaşırma döneminden sonra onu da çalmanın yolunu bulur. ama bu sefer anlar ki bareyi epey üst perdelerde çalması gerekmektedir.
son aşama ustalık aşamasıdır. artık gitarist adayımız staccato'ları daha iyi çalmak için penasız çalar, üst perdelerde power chord'u bare olarak basar ve artık elimizde doğru düzgün smoke on the water çalan bir gitarist vardır. ama sırada daha tonlarca düzgün çalınacak şarkı vardır.
